I was honored to sing at three Billy Graham Crusades. At the first in Hamilton, Ontario (1988), Mr. Barrows’ secretary called and told me there would be a meeting in his room the morning of the Crusade and I was to be there. As I arrived, Cliff welcomed me, got a soda for me and we chatted. I was getting a bit nervous that no one else was showing up at the meeting and that I was taking his time. Then it hit me. The meeting was just so he could meet me. I was so honored and the friendship continued.

Four or five years ago, we were at an event in Atlanta. The concert hall was filled and on stage was a 300-voice choir and an orchestra. I was standing six or eight feet behind Cliff singing along as he was leading “How Great Thou Art.” During the first chorus, Cliff turned and said, “Steve, is that you?” (His eyesight had started to go.) He said, “Step up here and sing the next verse.” I was humbled.

I am thankful for the influence of Cliff Barrows in my life.
